Aircraft Carriers aren’t a one-trick pony

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

“We have a full service hospital on board. We’ve got a surgeon, petty officers who specialize in medicine, we can turn the hangar bay into a triage unit,” explained Commander David Hecht, a Navy Public Affairs Officer.

On board the ship are supplies to help with both humanitarian aid and rescue, including: 83 pallets of water, 59 pallets of cots, 500 hardhats, 500 safety glasses, 500 masks, 400 gloves, 2000 cans of insect repellent, 20 cases of MRE’s, and 200 camel packs, according to Commander Hecht.

The Navy is also sending the USNS Comfort and the USS Mesa Verde. But the George Washington has a unique capability.

“An aircraft carrier has an incredible capacity for making fresh water in a disaster situation; that’s vital.” Hecht told WAVY.com the ship can turn as many as 400,000 gallons of salt water into fresh water daily.

20 cases of MREs? That’s only 240 MREs.

Unless they got cases on cases.

Essentially floating cities.

They can also generate enough electricity to power a small city, and have been known to tie up to a pier, hookup, and backfeed the power grid until regular electrical service can be restored.

Don’t a few of them have railguns now too?

Nope. The LBJ , last of three Zumwalt-class destroyers and currently under construction, may be fitted with a railgun, but that’s a ways off yet.

Kudos to the Navy. I feel we shouldn’t be world police, but we should seriously help out in all disasters. Never knowant when we will need everyone else to return the favor.

What Skyfire77 said.

As far as I know, the Ford class carriers will have the ABILITY to equip free electron lasers - assuming they ever become a thing - but the Nimitz class doesn’t have the infrastructure to handle that sort of thing.

Technically, the only weapon systems on a carrier are of the defensive variety (anti-air missiles & CWIS); they rely on the air wing to do the real damage. Yeah, if you want to be pedantic, the air wing IS the main weapon system; but since Navy planes aren’t constrained to a carrier and aren’t built along with them, they don’t count IMO

Yup, and if they ever get the Ford class straightened out, it could power an even bigger city. Last I heard, the Ford reactors & generators will be capable of 3X the power output of a Nimitz. IF they get it working...

I saw the Zumwalt over at Norfolk the other day as I was cruising on I-664. That sucker is huge!

Sadly, I doubt many countries that could help if we needed it would help at all. That said, I strongly agree with your comment anyway. If one were to look at how much US Navy ships have helped across the globe for disaster relief, it alone would nearly justify their size.

Wavy 10 is known to have the proofreading skill of your average Gawker Media author. It wouldn’t surprise me if they left off a zero or two

I have faith, in the reactor plant systems at least. It’s the rest of the ship I worry about.

Also, that’s a crazy amount of electricity, 300 MW... per plant!

Agreed! The Navy doesn’t screw around when it comes to a reactor plant.
